Art Education, MA

The Master of Arts degree in Art Education accommodates the seasoned art teacher, as well as the inexperienced pre-professional student who is seeking advanced knowledge and/or training in the field of art education. Students interested in West Virginia PK-12 Visual Art certification may seek an MA plus certification.

The program requirements can be tailored to your needs and can include a studio emphasis, a classroom research emphasis or a community arts emphasis. The program typically includes a minimum of 30 hours of coursework, culminating in a research paper or project.

In addition, students with a BFA or a BA in Art may pursue postbaccalaureate certification as a nondegree seeking graduate student.

The MA in Art Education accommodates seasoned art teachers, as well as pre-professional students seeking advanced knowledge and training.

The MA in Art Education requires completing a minimum of 30 hours with a recommended total of 36. Your exact course of study is determined through consultation with your adviser and graduate committee. This degree can also lead to certification with an additional semester for student teaching.

Students are required to produce a written thesis or, at the graduate committee's discretion, may complete a research project.

A graduate certificate in is also offered.

    Expand your curiosity — and enhance your curriculum — through the 91ÌÒÉ« Honors College. Two programs are offered: for first- and second-year students and for third- and fourth-year students.

Any 91ÌÒÉ« student enrolled in a graduate program of a related field may also take the Therapeutic Art certificate courses.

In this two-semester graduate certificate program, you'll engage in free exploration, art experimentation, group discussion and personal reflections to explore therapeutic art concepts and theories and apply learned methods to personal and professional practices.

The certificate is offered exclusively online and can be completed in one year.

Program Facility - Creative Arts Center

Canady Creative Arts Center

The Loulie, Valerie and William Canady Creative Arts center boasts 4 exhibition spaces, 5 performance spaces, 33 individual practice rooms and 50 classrooms and studios with plenty of space to create. The loading dock at the rear of the building is a wonderful open-air space with stunning acoustics.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into a graduate program at 91ÌÒÉ« an applicant must submit official, bachelor's degree transcripts from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75. 91ÌÒÉ« operates decentralized admissions. Decentralized admissions allows each graduate program to set its own application requirements in addition to the University requirements.
